Mataatua Declaration: The Challenges Ahead
“The Mataatua Declaration on the Cultural and Intellectual Property Rights of Indigenous Peoples made its international debut at Kokohinau Marae in Te Teko, June 18th 1993, projected to conference participants on a white bed sheet. Despite these humble beginnings the Declaration has stood the test of time as an articulation of the concerns and aspirations of indigenous peoples in relation to cultural and intellectual property rights. Twenty-five years after its’ development, many of the concerns expressed remain unresolved. Where to from here? What needs to happen to bring to fruition a more fit for purpose intellectual property regime?”
